Rombauer Vineyards – Bringing Joy to the World

The one constant you may notice from Rombauer Vineyards is the message of joy. Joy of good wines, good company, and good food. In fact, Irma Rombauer, the proprietor’s great aunt, was the author of the renowned cookbook The Joy of Cooking. Safe to say, the philosophy of Rombauer Vineyards revolves around the joy of all aspects that bring great wine to fruition – sustainably farming the land and precise winemaking – culminating with the love of wine and food pairings. A visit to either one of their tasting rooms will not disappoint as you experience the joy and passion reflected in every wine they craft.

Founded in 1980 by Koerner and Joan Rombauer, Rombauer Vineyards has been producing acclaimed wines ever since and is still family-owned and operated. While they are best known for their rich and buttery “California-style” Chardonnay, they also make a refreshing Sauvignon Blanc as well as complex reds, most notably Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. They also produce a red blend, Merlot, and Barbera.

Rombauer’s Napa Valley tasting room is nestled on a tree-covered hill in St. Helena, just off the Silverado Trail. The outside tasting area offers stunning views of the Mayacamas Mountains and landscaped gardens with more than 100 varieties of plants and flowers. During your visit, you can choose from a traditional tasting flight or a “wines by the glass” experience. The tasting flight is a one-hour offering of a selection of wines for up to four guests. Wines by the Glass is a relaxing opportunity to enjoy wines of your choosing at an outdoor table while gazing at the beautiful view. Your choice of wine is purchased a la carte either by the glass or by the bottle. Open Thursday through Monday, these 90-minute tastings are for up to eight guests. Reservations are required.

Rombauer Best Autumn Wine by Forbes

Whether your experience is remote or in-person, Rombauer Vineyards’ wines are truly exceptional. Yes, they have rich and opulent Chardonnays, which they have been crafting since 1982, but each vintage has a unique profile. The 2020 Carneros Chardonnay greets you with beautiful aromas of ripe yellow peach and meyer lemon, with hints of clove and vanilla. The peach, lemon, and vanilla spices are the primary flavors that lead to both sweet fruit flavors and balanced acidity. This wine was aged for nine months in American and French oak barrels. They also produce small bottlings of single-vineyard Chardonnays and a Proprietor Selection Chardonnay that showcases the vineyards from the Carneros region and the handcrafted precision that goes into every bottle. The Proprietor Selection is a reserve Chardonnay produced only in exceptional vintages by blending the best barrels from the finest lots. The 2020 Proprietor Selection showcases stone fruit, floral honey, baking spice and vanilla, accented with a fresh, mouthwatering acidity and long, lingering finish.

If Chardonnay isn’t your style, don’t miss their crisp 2020 Sauvignon Blanc. Bursting with fresh flavors of pink grapefruit, lime, and honeyed apricot with a warm note of vanilla on the finish, this wine is perfect for so many occasions!

If you like red wines, their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is the gold standard. The wine is full-bodied, layered with raspberry and black cherry flavors, supported by supple tannins that carry through to a smooth finish. Composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc 3% Merlot, this is an essential wine to have on hand for a cozy night in or at your favorite restaurant. Alongside the classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, they currently offer the 2017 Diamond Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, which showcases the best lots harvested each growing season. This reserve bottling comes from selected vineyards in Calistoga, Oakville, and St. Helena AVAs (American Viticultural Areas). The full and lush palate is highlighted by dark cherry and spice that gives way to hints of tobacco and vanilla. Pair with a juicy steak or prime rib for a special celebration.'

Rombauer Merlot

Introducing the Proprietor Selection Merlot!
Based on the quality of fruit in 2018, the winemakers quickly identified several vineyard blocks which stood above the rest, these became the Proprietor Selection Merlot. In 41 years, Rombauer Vineyards has only made this wine three times.

Rombauer proudly produces Zinfandel wine from both Napa Valley and the Sierra Foothills. The 2019 Rombauer Zinfandel comes from select vineyards in top growing regions: El Dorado County (42%), Amador County (38%), Lake County (12%), Lodi (6%) and Napa County (2%). Lush flavors of ripe plum and raspberry jam followed by touches of dark chocolate make this an amazing wine. Serve with a hearty lasagna for a heavenly evening!
Visit Rombauer Vineyards to taste their award-winning wines at either their Napa Valley or Sierra Foothills location. You will not regret experiencing such a highly regarded winery.
