Pedal to Adventure with Skunk Train Railbikes
The Tracks are Calling
It’s a one-of-a-kind adventure that gets everyone moving and smiling, all while making memories in the great outdoors. Book your family ride today.
The key to an unforgettable holiday lies in one simple question: What kind of adventure do you want to create? It could be a relaxing visit with beautiful views and a laid-back ambiance. Or, maybe a heart pumping, exercise-driven experience will do the trick. Why not blend both with a ride on the Skunk Train’s Railbikes in Mendocino County!
Imagine gliding along historic railroad tracks, reminiscing their storied past as the fresh forest air fills your lungs. A rhythmic hum of the rails rumbles beneath you and the natural world unfolds – all from the unique vantage point of a Railbike.
These Railbikes are perfect for pairs and families to enjoy. Visitors can either pedal the traditional way or opt for their electric-assisted attachment that’s easy to operate and safe to maneuver, all with the push of a button. Riders of all fitness and skill levels are welcome to coast the rails with ease using these unique features.
Since you don’t need to steer Railbikes, riders can sit back, breathe deep, and discover Northern California’s woodlands right from their seat. Aside from the expected fern and moss species, prepare to be surrounded by native flora such as the Coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) which grow naturally from Big Sur north to the California-Oregon border, and about 12 miles inland. These majestic giants are pillars along the Skunk Train’s Redwood Route with some of them reaching over 300 feet - see if you can spot the tallest one!
Uncover a fresh sense of adventure when you book one of Skunk Train’s three Railbike experiences:
Pudding Creek Railbikes:
Pedal along the Pudding Creek Estuary, where dappled sunlight and an unobscured view of the natural world paint this route vividly. Here you can spot more native plant and animal species like “Skunk Cabbage” (a large-leafed, water-sprouting plant), blue heron and osprey, maybe even a playful river otter or a deer munching on foliage.
Your knowledgeable Railbike guides will stop along the way to share historical facts about the route and the interesting additions you can see during your visit.
Stop at Glen Blair Junction, a stunning gathering area complete with firepits, backyard games, and the perfect place to enjoy a picnic lunch, available for purchase. You’ll have time to explore their loop trail where you can walk amongst redwoods and blossoming iris and trillium plants before heading back to the depot with memories that last a lifetime.
This experience departs most days of the year.
Railbikes on the Noyo:
Discover a new side of the Redwood Route aboard this longer Railbike experience! This journey will take you 25 miles off the beaten path on a reserved section of track along the Noyo River.
Each turn reveals a breathtaking view - trestle bridges offering sweeping panoramas, forest corridors alive with the scent of pine, and historic markers sharing memories of what came before. Soon enough, you’ll enter the iconic Camp Noyo encompassed by redwood bunches and Common douglas fir.
Here you’ll have an extensive break to stretch your legs, enjoy your complimentary picnic lunch, and take a swim in the river before heading back to the depot feeling refreshed and renewed.
This adventure departs March through November.
Moonlight Railbikes to Glen Blair Bar:
Experience an evening expedition, departing most Fridays and Saturdays, on a Railbike complete with LED lights, a s’mores kit, and free drink tokens to use at Glen Blair Bar!
After meandering your way through the forest, you’ll enter the lively Glen Blair Junction-turned late night watering hole. Here you’ll find firepits, heaters, group games, live music, and a bar offering craft cocktails, local beer and wine, and more!
As the night ends, let the LED lights guide you home under the stars.
You can experience these bikes in other parts of California, too!
