Lake Sonoma Winery
Sonoma’s Best Kept Secret

If you haven’t strolled the side streets off the main Plaza in the quaint and historic town of Sonoma, then you’ve probably missed one of its best kept secrets: Lake Sonoma Winery. Nestled in a lovingly restored 1940s Craftsman at 134 Church Street, just steps from the town center, Lake Sonoma Winery’s new tasting room location offers simple luxury at its best. A selection of award-winning wines coupled with amazing tasting experiences awaits you. Visitors can choose from firelit tastings al fresco during the season to intimate indoor tastings led by expert wine hosts during the cooler winter months.

Their boutique collection of wines showcases the varietal and region’s unique characteristics for which they are best known. Hand-selected fruit from the prestigious sub-appellations of Sonoma County reflect the area’s diversity in terroir, like their Dry Creek Zinfandel, Russian River Chardonnay, or their stunning Sonoma Valley-grown Lazy Dog Vineyard Malbec. This intensely true-to-a-Malbec profile opens with aromas of violets, licorice, and mocha with silky palate flavors of honeyed apricot, dark plum and caramel. Velvety tannins lead to a seemingly endless finish. Don’t miss their 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon which recently won Gold at the 2021 San Francisco International Wine Competition. Sourced from a collection of top-notch Sonoma County vineyards, this Cabernet opens with bright floral aromas then deepens with classic notes of toasty oak, black currant, tobacco, and oiled leather. The palate combines traditional red and black fruits with hints of cocoa followed by plenty of supple, chewy tannins for a long finish.

The shaded patio offers guests the options to taste 4-5 wines from their lineup of locally grown varietals or you can enjoy wines by-the-glass (or bottle) along with a delicious cheese and charcuterie board brought in from neighboring Michelin-starred salumeria Ovello. Along with most of Sonoma’s businesses, Lake Sonoma Winery is pet friendly so leashed dogs are welcome on the patio during your visit.
Insider Tip: Skip the GPS for this hideaway as the nav guidance will loop you in circles around residential streets behind the winery. The best way to access the tasting room is to park on the west side of the Plaza and enter between the Sign of the Bear Kitchenware and Fairmont Gallery.
