WHAT’S GOING ON HERE AND THERE IN THE WINE COUNTRY

July is the month for picnics, swimming, hiking, biking, and canoeing. It is also the month during which California wineries and vineyards add food, wine and music to the recreational mix.
If you are proud of your discerning palate, then you’ll want to register for the 23rd annual California Wine Tasting Championships at Greenwood Ridge Vineyards. Register as an individual or couple by July 25th and participate Saturday and Sunday, July 30th and 31st. To watch costs nothing. Full details and entry forms are available at www.greenwoodridge.com.
Opening the Sterling Silver Screen series at Sterling Winery, in cooperation with Turner Classic Movies on July 16th is the musical “Kiss Me Kate.” Grounds open at seven pm with festival seating, wine tasting and concessions. Saturday, July 30th, designated as “A Giant Day at Raymond Vineyards” showcases outstanding chefs from Napa Valley’s finest restaurants turning their creative talents to making the world’s Finest Giant Sandwich. On hand to help judge will be athletes from the SF Giants, Seattle Seahawks, and half a dozen other teams. The fun starts at two pm. Tickets are $100 per person, $150 for a couple. If something less hearty than a giant sandwich is more to your liking, Ironstone Vineyards invites you to the Mountain Heirloom Quilt Faire XXVIII where talented stitchers show off 250 quilts, wall hangings, wearable art and handmade dolls. The celebration takes place Friday and Saturday, July 22nd and 23rd from ten am till five pm, and Sunday, July 24th from ten am till four pm. Tickets are $7 for one day, $18 for all three. To celebrate its newest wines, Simi Winery is staging a grand release party to be held Saturday, July 23rd from 11:00 am till four pm. There will be glasses set up in the lab for tasting sessions, a mini-seminar from noon till 1 pm and food prepared by Chef Eric Lee to match with the wines from one till four pm. Tickets are $25.
Gloria Ferrer Champagne Caves becomes the place to be Saturday and Sunday July 23rd and 24th for the Catalan Festival of Food, Wine and Music. Visitors are invited to sample wines and foods, watch cooking demonstrations and flamenco performances and just have a spectacularly wonderful time.
