Garré Winery Continues Traditional Italian Bocce Ball

Set to begin Wednesday May 17 and running every first and third Wednesday through the fall, Garré Winery embarks on their “Bocce Ball and Italian Dinner Night” series, where friends and strangers alike gather for food, fun, wine and bocce, all to the backdrop of the beautiful Wine Country at a traditional Italian themed winery. The weekly changing Italian menu is four courses of award-winning mangia served family style outdoors on their café courtyard. Guests also enjoy three glasses of complimentary wine as they try their hand at the traditional Italian game.
People have been playing bocce ball, or Italian Lawn Bowling, almost as long as they’ve been drinking wine. For many wine drinkers, especially ones with Italian roots, the two go hand in hand- a glass of wine in one hand, a bocce ball in the other. Several big name wineries in the Napa/Sonoma region such as Dry Creek Valley Winery and Stags Leap Winery have taken to the sport, hosting tournaments complete with leagues and even championship games.
The beauty of bocce ball lies in its simplicity; it’s easy and fun for everyone because it doesn’t require any particular athletic ability. “The thing we love about bocce ball is that it doesn’t require any particular athletic ability. The best part is that you can play while holding a glass of wine in one hand,” states Margaret Sherinian, long-time area resident and bocce ball aficionado. The fun, casual atmosphere at Garré Winery is emphasized, as all skill levels are welcome and pre-designed teams or partners are not required.
The tradition lives on at Garré Winery, where the family’s traditional Italian heritage is incorporated into the winery’s food, wine and essential character. Price is $32.95 per person and includes three glasses of wine, 4-course Italian meal, group instruction and play. Reservations are required.
