WHAT’S GOING ON HERE AND THERE IN THE WINE COUNTRY By Millie Howie This time of the year, when grapes are going through veraison – gaining color as the harvest nears, many wineries conduct tours through the vineyard so visitors can observe this important process in the life of the grape before it starts its journey towards becoming fine wine. For a tantalizing summer blend, wind your way to Korbel Champagne Cellars for Rockin’ and Rollin’ on the River, Saturday, August 27th. Festivities start at 11:30 a.m. and continue till 4 p.m. offering winery and garden tours, tasting of de-lovely sparkling wines and a barbecue lunch served from 12:30 till 2:30 p.m. Tickets are just $20 and your souvenir glass is yours to take home. Ironstone Vineyards rolls out the red carpet for John Tesh, New Age composer, recording artist and master musician, Saturday evening, August 20th. General admission is $30, reserved seating, $55 and to include the buffet dinner, tickets are $95, available at all Ticketmaster Outlets and on-line at ticketmaster.com. The Annual Summer Tasting of just released wines is set for Saturday, August 13th at Battaglini Estate Winery. While Joe uncorks the wine, Lucia sets out her own specially prepared Italian tidbits. Club members enjoy the day, from 10 a.m. till 5 p.m. for free. Non-members, just $5. Get out your calendar and put a mark on the first Friday of each month to remind yourself that that is the first day of the new Winery of the Month at Langley’s on the Green in Windsor. Executive chef/owner Fred Langley and sous chef David McDowell have been sipping and tasting with winemaker Mike Grgich to create the specials menu for the salute to Grgich Hills throughout the month of August. The price is in the neighborhood of $75 per person, depending on the availability of local, seasonal products. Another chef, showing off his talents is Todd Muir at St. Francis Winery. For the winery’s “Under the Sonoma Moon Dinner,” Todd has created magical menu that matches the balmy beauty of the evening with the sublime flavors of St. Francis wines. The date is Saturday, August 27th from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Reservations at $95 per person are recommended. It’s time again to head to Christopher Creek Winery for the Syrah Stampede, August 13th from 11 a.m. till 5 p.m. All your favorite barbecued meats paired with the just released 2004 Viognier and the 2003 Reserve Syrah.
