Judd’s ‘day job’ is as part of the highly regarded winemaking team at his family’s winery---Judd’s Hill. His family has been making fine Napa Valley wines for over 25 years. The winery will be relocating to a new facility at 2332 Silverado Trail in Napa this August. Judd’s father, Art Finkelstein, had been an architect in Los Angeles who began making wine at home in the early 1970s. After winning many awards over the years, Art and his wife Bunnie and son Judd decided to relocate to the Napa Valley. In 1988 they moved to a vineyard in the eastern hills of St. Helena, where they built Judd’s Hill. The idea was to produce no more than 3,000 cases of wine per year, an amount which would allow them to bring a hands-on approach to every aspect of wine production.
The family has another business, Napa Valley Custom MicroCrush (www.nvcmc.com), where since 1992 they have been making small lots of handcrafted customized wine for a range of clients, ranging from vineyard owners to wine enthusiasts. The service is all-inclusive, from fruit sourcing through bottling. Napa Valley Custom MicroCrush has helped launch several commercial brands, including Clark-Claudon and Black Coyote. The Finkelsteins’ winemaking expertise is regularly sought by wine industry trade groups who ask them to speak at seminars on how to vineyard owners can better market their grapes.
