Livermore ’s Holiday in the Vineyards Just outside the town of Livermore, in the heart of Livermore Valley, Retzlaff Winery sits at the end of a rural lane lined with pink pepper trees. Though it’s only a few miles from the freeway and barely an hour east of San Francisco Bay, Retzlaff is very much in the country. On December 3 and 4, Retzlaff will take part in Holiday in the vineyards – an open house at the wineries to celebrate the season and share the holiday joy. Christmas gifts, with a wine emphasis, music, decorations and the tidings of the holiday season. Retzlaff Winery makes 3000 to 4000 cases of wine each year, handcrafted from their organically grown estate vines. Retzlaff reds include Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, plus a Bordeaux-style blend of the two. There’s also the family’s limited Reserve Cab, made with grapes from a small plot of non-trellised vines in front of the house. In whites, they make a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, plus an easy-sipping Chardonnay. Retzlaff also makes a Cabernet port, whose striking label features a shiny golden summer sun designed by Gloria. On future releases the design will be etched into the bottle. Visitors especially enjoy the summertime Shakespeare Festival held in the garden, but the winery puts out the welcome mat year-round. Retzlaff Winery is located at 1356 So. Livermore Avenue in Livermore. For more information, call (925) 447-8941 or visit www.retzlaffwinery.com. Open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 2 p.m., weekends until 4:30 p.m.
