WHAT’S GOING ON HERE AND THERE IN THE WINE COUNTRY

By Millie Howie

When wine lovers plan their tours of the wine country, hoping to discover a new wine sensation, they also, on purpose or by accident, often get a taste of some fine foods, great music or exhilarating outdoor events as wineries seek to woo visitors to their facilities.
Jazz is the music being presented at Quivira Vineyards on June 11th starting at 1 p.m. Featured in the courtyard will be the Claudia Villella and Ricardo Peixoto Quintet. Tickets are $30 per person and they may be purchased on-line at www.healdsburgjazzfestival.com.
Everything is coming up roses and fragrant herbs at the Fetzer Valley Oaks Cooking School Saturday, June 4th, from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. Fetzer Chef Bridget Harrington will be joined by Chef Craig Strattman of Patrona Restaurant as they feature the great smelling ingredients in salads, sauces, drinks and desserts. Cost is $10 per person and reservations may be made by calling 1-800-846-8637.
Pinot Noir is the wine variety featured June 4th and 5th at Lynmar Winery as Hugh Chappelle, winemaker, siphons Pinot Noir right from the barrel for a glimpse at how the 2004 vintage, which won’t be released until next year, is developing. Sampling hours are 11 a.m. till 4 p.m. and there is no charge.
Another musical offering is on the schedule at Rodney Strong Vineyards as the 16th Annual Concert Season opens June 18th with Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra. Tickets at $40 per person are available through the website: www.rodneystrong.com or by calling (949) 360-7800.
A blend of satisfying and delicious wine, food, and both a silent and live auction are on the program for the Sonoma County Wine Library’s annual Sonoma Odyssey, Saturday, June 18th in Richard’s Grove & Saralee’s Vineyard, from two till 5:30 p.m.  Reservations, at $40 per person for Wine Library members and $50 for non-members may be purchased by calling (707) 431-2898.
Father’s Day is celebrated Sunday, June 19th at Chateau Souverain with a Dad-pleasing grill with sausage sandwiches ($4) and oysters on the half shell ($2) served on the terrace with a live jazz background.  Complete the day with Chef Martin Courtman’s three course brunch served from 11 a.m. till 4 p.m., just $50 per person.
