Tasting Room of the Week:

Rombauer Vineyards

by Charles Neave
The setting of the tasting room – the physical, topological, geographical and architectural setting – at Rombauer is amazing. Even the memorabilia – that includes such things as notes from Chuck Yeager, Garth Brooks and various high government officials – is fascinating.

Yes, you are on top of a large knoll in the middle of one of the Napa Valley’s most famous grape-growing regions, and yes, you are in this very special spot, but most of all you will find that the wines here are not just excellent, but they are exceptional in every possible way.
If you spend even a little bit of time in the Rombauer Vineyards tasting room you will learn that Rombauer Vineyards was founded in 1982 by Koerner and Joan Rombauer. The winery itself features caves that extend for over a mile into the hillside and provide a constant level of humidity and temperature which provide the best possible conditions for aging wine.
The wines at Rombauer are always placed at the highest level in the trade and consumer publications and in customer loyalty (witness the fans that flock to the tasting room, day in and day out). “Wine is something that truly should be enjoyed,” they say. And Rombauer puts a lot of care into making drinkable wines and that one word, “drinkable” is key to the philosophy and the attraction of their wine.
Just so you don’t think that this is a family newly arrived to the grape, Koerner Rombauer’s family at one time made wine in the famous Reingau region in Germany and his great aunt, Irma Rombauer, wrote the book “The Joy of Cooking,” the indispensable bible in millions of kitchens the world over. Hence the winery’s focus on wine as it complements good friends, good times, and good food.

Every member of the Rombauer family is actively involved in the daily operation of the winery, from selecting the grapes for the winemaking and making the wine to getting the wine into markets and restaurants.
Wines produced by Rombauer include spectacular Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot and more. A chance to taste these amazing wines, in such a lofty setting, is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and one that is not to be missed whenever you have the chance to visit the Napa Valley.
The ever-friendly tasting room at Rombauer Vineyards is located at 3522 Silverado Trail near the town of St. Helena. For additional information, call them at
