The moment guests step through the gate at VJB Vineyards and Cellars they’re transported to a small Italian village. Buildings made of stone and rustic wood beams lend an Old World feel, and on sunny, pleasant days the winery’s piazza is full of happy visitors enjoying all that VJB has to offer.
One of the first things guests notice as they enter is the Red Rooster Kitchen with its wood oven. Crisp Neapolitan-style pizzas, calzones and flatbreads are delivered hot and fresh to guests’ tables to enjoy with one of VJB’s many Italian varietal wines.
Next, they might spot the sign for Kenwood Pasta Company where pastas are made fresh daily or the chocolate and gelato shop where many guests complete their visit with a taste of something sweet to send them on their way.
Making their way toward the tasting room, they’ll spot more guests enjoying authentic panini, cheese and salumi boards from La Cucina, the onsite deli and marketplace filled with Italian goods including owner Maria Belmonte’s own pasta sauces and pestos.
Once at the tasting room bar, VJB’s friendly, knowledgeable staff takes guests through one of two tasting options, including one that features the winery’s most exclusive, limited-production wines such as the Estate Sangiovese or Montepulciano. Chances are visitors will try wines they’ve never tasted before and gain an appreciation for these rare, California-grown Italian varietals that are produced with an eye toward New World innovation and Old World sensibility.
From the wines to the architecture, the food and the hospitality, everything here is a testament to the Belmonte family’s Italian heritage. Guests will undoubtedly leave here feeling like they’ve experienced that unique culture.
Sangiovese is one of the best known Italian wines and once you taste VJB’s Estate Sangiovese, you’ll know why. This Sonoma Valley grown wine is full of red, ripe fruit flavors and has soft, seductive tannins making it the perfect wine to pair with pasta and red sauce. VJB also produces Barbera, a red wine that’s as popular as it is versatile. The winery’s flagship wine, Dante, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese that wows everyone who tastes it.
VJB’s piazza is the perfect place to linger over lunch and a glass of wine seven days a week. When the weather is nice, the Wine Country Tenors perform at 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays putting on an entertaining half hour show. Afterwards, visitors can browse the art gallery or the marketplace for estate-grown olive oil and a wide range of the very best imported Italian pantry items to enjoy at home, a reminder of this authentic taste of Italy in the Sonoma Valley.
