The moment guests step through the gate at VJB Vineyards and Cellars they’re transported to a small Italian village. Buildings made of stone and rustic wood beams lend an Old World feel, and on sunny, pleasant days the winery’s piazza is full of happy visitors enjoying all that VJB has to offer.
One of the first things guests notice as they enter is the Red Rooster Kitchen with its wood oven. Crisp Neapolitan-style pizzas, calzones and flatbreads are delivered hot and fresh to guests’ tables to enjoy with one of VJB’s many Italian varietal wines.
Next, they might spot the sign for Kenwood Pasta Company where pastas are made fresh daily or the chocolate and gelato shop where many guests complete their visit with a taste of something sweet to send them on their way.
Making their way toward the tasting room, they’ll spot more guests enjoying authentic panini, cheese and salumi boards from La Cucina, the onsite deli and marketplace filled with Italian goods including owner Maria Belmonte’s own pasta sauces and pestos.
Once at the tasting room bar, VJB’s friendly, knowledgeable staff takes guests through one of two tasting options, including one that features the winery’s most exclusive, limited-production wines such as the Estate Sangiovese or Montepulciano. Chances are visitors will try wines they’ve never tasted before and gain an appreciation for these rare, California-grown Italian varietals that are produced with an eye toward New World innovation and Old World sensibility.
From the wines to the architecture, the food and the hospitality, everything here is a testament to the Belmonte family’s Italian heritage. Guests will undoubtedly leave here feeling like they’ve experienced that unique culture.
For wine tasters looking for a taste of something unique, VJB offers a large library of limited-production Italian varietals. The Barbera helped put VJB on the map, winning rave reviews from its earliest vintages a decade ago, and it still never fails to please. Tart red cherry aromas and flavors paired with a bright acidity make this a mouthwatering wine that’s as versatile as it is easy to drink. The estate grown Montepulciano is a rare find and a great California expression of one of Italy’s most popular grapes. Cherry and ripe berry aromas are bolstered by a subtle earthiness. The mouthfeel is smooth and voluptuous making it an ideal pairing with braised meats and mushroom dishes.
There truly is something for everyone who visits VJB. VJB is a food lover’s paradise. There’s a marketplace packed with top of the line pantry goods, including owner Maria Belmonte’s own line of pasta sauces and pestos. The adjoining deli turns out an impressive array of panini and antipasti as well as a large selection of imported and locally produced cheeses and salumi. Pizzas from the wood-fired oven are one of the most popular items to enjoy along with a glass of wine. Guests can also browse in the newly opened Tommy Bahama shop or satisfy their sweet tooth with handmade wine-infused truffles or a scoop of gelato at the Wine Truffle Boutique.
