The moment guests step through the gate at VJB Vineyards and Cellars they’re transported to a small Italian village. Buildings made of stone and rustic wood beams lend an Old World feel, and on sunny, pleasant days the winery’s piazza is full of happy visitors enjoying all that VJB has to offer.
One of the first things guests notice as they enter is the Red Rooster Kitchen with its wood oven. Crisp Neapolitan-style pizzas, calzones and flatbreads are delivered hot and fresh to guests’ tables to enjoy with one of VJB’s many Italian varietal wines.
Next, they might spot the sign for Kenwood Pasta Company where pastas are made fresh daily or the chocolate and gelato shop where many guests complete their visit with a taste of something sweet to send them on their way.
Making their way toward the tasting room, they’ll spot more guests enjoying authentic panini, cheese and salumi boards from La Cucina, the onsite deli and marketplace filled with Italian goods including owner Maria Belmonte’s own pasta sauces and pestos.
Once at the tasting room bar, VJB’s friendly, knowledgeable staff takes guests through one of two tasting options, including one that features the winery’s most exclusive, limited-production wines such as the Estate Sangiovese or Montepulciano. Chances are visitors will try wines they’ve never tasted before and gain an appreciation for these rare, California-grown Italian varietals that are produced with an eye toward New World innovation and Old World sensibility.
From the wines to the architecture, the food and the hospitality, everything here is a testament to the Belmonte family’s Italian heritage. Guests will undoubtedly leave here feeling like they’ve experienced that unique culture.
VJB produces a number of Italian varietals rarely grown in California such as the Primitivo redolent with fruit and spice or the deep and earthy Aglianico. Each month new, limited production Italian wines are released, including inaugural vintages of Nebbiolo and Negroamaro in late 2014 and early 2015, ensuring that guests will have a unique tasting experience each visit.
There’s always a reason to linger a little longer at VJB. Enjoy a glass of your favorite wine from your tasting along with a panini from the deli on the piazza. Sit back and listen to the Wine Country Tenors’ weekend afternoon performance. Browse the marketplace to find great gifts for friends and family. Savor something sweet from the onsite chocolate and gelato shop. Whatever you choose, it’s a great way to soak up a bit more of VJB’s Italian charm and hospitality.
