Winery owner/winemaker, Lisa Pretty, creates 100% estate-grown Bordeaux varietals and blends under the Pretty-Smith label. The red wines are aged in oak for 3.5 years and then in bottle an additional year prior to release to produce a SOFT, SMOOTH and SILKY style. Each vintage the entire label series changes to feature original works of art by the winemaker, typically reproductions of rock art or “pretty glyphs.”

The winery was built in 1980 and was the thirteenth bonded winery in the Paso Robles AVA. At that time it was named Mission View Estate since the Mission San Miguel can be viewed from many points in the vineyards. Although the name was changed to Pretty-Smith in 2000 when the property was sold to Lisa Pretty and Victor Smith, the winery has continued to produce wines under the Mission View brand all these years. The Mission View brand has a fruit-forward style and is priced at just $17/bottle. Previously Mission View was only available through distribution on the east coast; however, it may once again be sampled and purchased in the tasting room, offering customers a great value wine.

Take the drive through the gates adorned with Kokopelli, up the oak studded hill to the rustic winery. The tasting room, located inside the estate winery, offers views of the vineyard and a picnic area with the hills of San Miguel for a backdrop.

Varietals
Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Fun Fact
The winery’s Standard Poodle was named after the icon in the logo. Kokopelli was known as the God of Fertility and viewed by many as a trickster – “Koko” was fixed as a puppy and that was Lisa’s trick on him.

The Pretty Café
The old tasting room has been transformed into a private event room known as the Pretty Café. Groups of six or more can book the room for a food and wine pairing experience. Custom menus are created to suit the tastes and budget of the event with many menus created from Lisa’s Eat This With Paso Robles Wine recipe book published November 2011.

About:

Though she is a proud Canadian, Pretty invokes the Southwestern spirit of Kokopelli when she is crafting her ultra-premium wines or creating the artwork for the labels. An unofficial mascot of the label since it was established in 2000, the legendary figure of Kokopelli symbolizes a variety of things to the Pretty-Smith label. With the hump of his back carrying seeds of plants and flowers, and the music of his flute creating warmth for germination, the presence of Kokopellis' spirit in the vineyard assures a continuing life of balance and harmony.
