Set a few minutes drive into a tranquil, Redwood-lined ridge off Spring Mountain Road, a visit to Keenan Tasting Room is an informal affair. Because of its private, peaceful setting, guests are encouraged to take a time out from the hurried tasting room trail, wander the grounds, picnic at leisure and make themselves at home.

Scrappy, the Black Lab, welcomes visitors into the cool, comfortable pet- and child-friendly tasting room. Its century-old redwood beams and heavy stone walls were built in harmony with the elements to house barreled wines long before the days of air conditioning and temperature control.

Having sat empty, in a state of dilapidation for some forty years post-Prohibition, Robert Keenan’s pleasantly regenerated winery tasting room – with its imposing King Louis antique banquet table from the late 1700s – is housed in the original wine production facility.

Groups of up to 12 are invited to taste at a cost $10 per person from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment, lured by the pull of the winery’s quintessential “big reds.”

Hand-crafted, small-production wines produced by solar powered, sustainably farmed vineyards, present tasting opportunities of dramatic intensity thanks to the super-premium fruit associated with exceptional wines produced at Keenan Winery.

Consultant Winemaker Nils Venge (the first American winemaker to ever receive a score of “100” from Robert Parker, Jr. of The Wine Advocate for one of his 1985 Cabernet Sauvignons) works with the winery’s small, dedicated team on four areas of hillside that are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Merlot grapes.

By carefully controlling and finessing abundant flavors of these hillside-grown grapes, wines of unparalleled complexity, richness and elegance continue to win prestigious awards with every vintage.

Historic Keenan Winery is nestled high on the Mayacamas Range, at an elevation of 1,700 feet high above the valley floor. With more than a dozen eclectic wineries located within a four-mile stretch of Spring Mountain Road, a day on Spring Mountain offers a tranquil escape from the ordinary.
