Wild Horse Winery
Free Spirited On The Road Less Travelled
Located in Templeton, California, away from the “regular” tasting rooms of Paso Robles, lies Wild Horse Winery — a destination well worth the detour while on your wine country visit.
Founded by legendary California pioneer winemaker Ken Volk in 1981, Wild Horse was named after the descendants of Spanish Mustangs that used to roam the area, and exemplifies the free spirited winemaking philosophy that produce wines of distinction and character. The bucolic setting is the perfect venue to sample wines that are reflective of the Central Coast’s varying climates and terroir, tasting in a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere, appealing to all who desire a memorable wine tasting experience.
Taste The Central Coast “Unbridled, like no other”
At Wild Horse, you have the opportunity to experience and compare the best of California’s Central Coast grape-growing regions, highlighting the diverseness of terroir and micro-climates spread from north to south. Grapes are sourced from well-regarded vineyards as far north as Monterey and Monterey County, down through Paso Robles (inclusive of many estate-grown grapes), and southward to vineyards throughout the Santa Maria Valley and Santa Barbara County. In pursuit of creating wines that express the specific terroir and personality of the grape, Todd Ricard and Kip Lorenzetti, winemakers, are unfettered in their crafting wines without regard to any specific formula or restraints. They think outside the box and refer to their winemaking philosophy as “attentive neglect,” which simply stated means: Staying out of the way whenever possible and letting the climate, soil and grape variety call the shots.
Come Visit…Come Taste
A visit to this child-friendly, dog-friendly tasting room and vineyard is simply….a delight. Bring a picnic lunch and sit out on the patio while you sample a selection of Wild Horse wines. Or, enjoy the intimacy of the comfortable tasting room, chatting with other like-minded wine lovers.
Wild Horse is committed to sustainable, eco-friendly farming. Perhaps, while wandering the vineyards you will come across Dolly and Salvador, the winery “guard llamas,” who protect and guide the weed eating sheep herd. Or, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one of barn owls “living” onsite (in owl boxes), that are a major factor controlling gophers and rodents that are harmful to the vines. While tasting, talk with your friendly pourer about the other methods that Wild Horse employs in order to grow their fruit in the most eco-friendly, sustainable manner possible.
