Family, Food & Wine – A Legacy Is Born
VJB Vineyards & Cellars is owned and operated by the Belmonte family, who once owned and operated the very popular Caffe Portofino restaurant in downtown Santa Rosa. Maria and Vittorio Belmonte ran the kitchen and the back of the house, and sons Henry and Victor ran the front of the house. Watching the diners enjoy their family’s traditional Italian dishes inspired Henry and Victor to start making their own wine to enhance their guest’s experience.
In 1999, the brothers made their first Cabernet Sauvignon, but before that wine was ever bottled, Victor passed away unexpectedly. Though filled with grief, Henry, along with his parents, was determined to keep his younger brother’s memory and passion for making wine alive, so VJB Vineyards and Cellars—named for Victor Joseph Belmonte—was born and still remains family owned and operated to this day.
In 2002, the Belmonte’s sold their restaurant. They opened their first tasting room in Kenwood on Memorial Day weekend in 2003. The new tasting room thrived, but the family wanted a space where visitors could experience not only their wines, but also food and an atmosphere that spoke to their Italian heritage and hospitality.
In the summer of 2012, VJB Vineyards and Cellars celebrated the grand opening of their tasting room, marketplace and deli, as well as an outdoor pizza kitchen and a fabulous piazza that is the heart of the property (which is not far from the original tasting room in Kenwood). All of the food is house made and the deli and restaurant offer a wide variety of delicious treats to choose from.
VJB Vineyards and Cellars is pet friendly, kid friendly, and just plain friendly in general.
Italian Varietals Under the Sonoma Sun
VJB Vineyards and Cellars is one of a very few wineries growing and producing several Italian varietals rarely seen, let alone produced in California and they do a stunning job of it! I tasted a handful of wines during my visit and all of them were excellent! Here are my favorites:
2015 Estate Sangiovese: Mouthwatering aromas of cherry, orange peel, caramel, vanilla and peppery spice continue as flavors in the juicy, balanced mouth and on through the finish.
2015 Estate Dante (Blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Sangiovese): This is a bold, balanced wine with abundant aromas and flavors of ripe black cherry, raspberry, savory herb and black pepper notes, all wrapped up in an opulently rich mouthfeel. Long, delicious finish.
2015 Estate Montepulciano: This delicious red wine is a study in cherries, spice and savory herbs, from the first sniff, through the big, bold mouthfeel and on through the long finish.
Come, shop, eat, drink, relax and rejuvenate at VJB Vineyards & Cellars – enjoy a delicious mini Italian vacation under the Sonoma sun! It’s the Italian way – come as a guest and leave as part of the family.
