Tedeschi Family Winery
98 years ago, the first generation of the Tedeschi family emigrated from Italy to Rhode Island. Shortly after, they moved to San Francisco and started their first company doing the pinstriping and lettering on Wells Fargo stagecoaches. The family was taken with the beauty of Calistoga, at the northern end of the Napa Valley. Their son, Eugene Tedeschi, purchased the family estate in the 1950’s which was planted to acres of apple, prune, and walnut orchards. In 1956, he planted his grapevines between the trees which included Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah. Eugene’s son, Emil Tedeschi, replanted his father’s orchards and vineyards to single varietal Cabernet Sauvignon.
New Ideas Meet Old Traditions
The family is known for producing old world Bordeaux-style wines that are balanced, lower in alcohol. The wines are highlighted by complex flavors and aromas and are age-worthy. Emilio and Mario have the same passion as their father, Emil, and have taken the helm of the business in their twenties.
Emilio Tedeschi, General Manager, was born in Hawaii on the island of Maui, and moved to Calistoga at three years old as fourth generation, steward to the family homestead and winery dream. Having graduated high school with honors in Napa, Emilio attended Gonzaga University in Washington state, where he completed a degree in Biochemistry. Today, Emilio is realizing his own dream as well as his father’s by attending Sonoma State University with the goal of a MBA in Wine Business. Visitors to the winery will have the pleasure of meeting Emilio in the tiny Tasting Room as he is a vital part of all aspects of the winery and sincerely enjoys sharing the wine with visitors.
Mario Tedeschi, Winemaker and Vineyard Manager, felt his passion for the land in the family vineyards. Mario is a farmer at heart like his father, grandfather and great-grandfather before him. Mario learned winemaking alongside his father, absorbing generations of winemaking skills and techniques starting at a very early age. Today, Mario farms several of the vineyards supplying grapes for Tedeschi Family wines along with his father’s Cabernet vineyard. Mario is happy to speak with visitors as they pass him on the winery’s crush pad or while he is passing them on the tractor heading to the vineyard
