Tackitt Family Vineyards
Wine Well Done!
Back in the early 1970s, long before Paso Robles was a flourishing wine scene, Tackitt Family Vineyards owner Leon Tackitt’s grandfather planted 29 Gewürztraminer vines he had brought to California from Germany. Fast forward 30 years, now set on 10 acres, with two acres planted in Gewürztraminer and Petite Sirah, the family vineyard is now well on its way to achieving recognition for both their award-winning wines and their charitable contributions to the military and local community.
Located north east of Paso Robles on the Pleasant Valley Wine Trail, the Tackitt family’s Tasting Room is located on the family vineyard, providing the perfect setting to relax, enjoy a glass of wine and play with the winery’s mascots – chocolate Labradors Harley and Lincoln.
In 2008, upon retiring from the U.S. Navy after a 28-year career, Leon Tackitt and wife Cindy made the move north from San Diego, settling in Paso Robles with their dream of starting a small boutique winery to include a dry Gewürztraminer. Throughout the years, with the assistance of their friends and neighbors in the close-knit wine community, they have accomplished just that, plus more.
A favorite destination for locals and visitors alike, Tackitt Family Vineyard has a wine for everyone. The tasting menu is diverse, with the flagship Gewürztraminer leading the line-up. A Grenache Rosé and Zinfandel join the award-winning estate Petite Sirah along with a port-style late-harvest Zinfandel known as “Dream Tyme” dessert wine. The winery’s ever-popular “BZ” (Bravo Zula) wine, a blend of Barbera and Zinfandel pays homage to the Naval signal Bravo Zula, which is typically conveyed by a flag hoist or voice radio message meaning “Well Done.” At Tackitt Family Vineyards, the “BZ” means “Wine Well Done!” Crafted in small lots by Tackitt, many of the wines are in limited quantities making them the perfect addition to a wine collector’s cellar.
Newly released just in time for Spring, Leon Tackitt has collaborated with friend and fellow winemaker Adam LaZarre to release TL Espera. A Muscat dessert wine in a southern-France style of a delectable Vins doux naturels, this wine is the perfect addition to Spring brunch menus.
EOD Warrior Foundation
A project close to the Tackitts is the EOD Warrior Foundation which provides financial assistance and support to active-duty and veteran wounded, injured or ill EOD warriors and their families. They created a second label, EOD Cellars, which honors these warriors by donating a portion of each purchase to the EOD Warrior Foundation. Featuring names such as The Keeper, Master Blaster and Willie Pete, the wines are akin to the Tackitt Family Vineyards portfolio and available at the tasting room, as well as at Naval Exchanges throughout California, and in retail stores in Virginia and Florida. In addition to EOD Cellars, Tackitt created a Boulder Crest Retreat Cabernet Sauvignon in which a percentage of each purchase is donated to the military and veteran wellness retreat located in the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.
