St. Francis Winery
Wine & Cheese Pairings: Showcasing Sonoma County
As any winemaker or chef will attest, the agricultural diversity found throughout Sonoma County is what makes this wine and food region so special. The vast range in micro-climates, varied topography from the valley floor up the mountain hillsides and the array of bio-diverse soils in between all contribute to defining this mecca of world-class vineyards, produce, meats, cheese and more. So it’s no surprise that St. Francis Winery & Vineyards, a Sonoma Valley pioneer in artisan winemaking since the 1970s, has made a commitment to honoring the area’s unique terroir through their award-winning winemaking and culinary programs.
Twice-named “#1 Restaurant in America” by OpenTable Diners (even though it isn’t a restaurant), the winery’s Executive Chef Bryan Jones has added a stellar Wine & Cheese Pairing focusing solely on Sonoma County cheeses. Each wine is tested with multiple cheeses to ensure the final chosen combination unites the best flavors from both, as well as educates and indulges their guests. The locally sourced goat, sheep and cow’s milk selections rotate throughout the year featuring each cheese at its seasonal peak. The variety includes superstar-producers such as Tomales Farmstead Creamery’s Liwa, a goat’s milk from Petaluma paired with the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Stack Vineyard or the famed St. George, a cow’s milk from Santa Rosa’s Joe Matos Cheese paired to the 2013 Old Vines Zinfandel, Bacchi Vineyard in Russian River Valley. The seated tasting includes a delicious flight of three wines with three cheeses for $25 per person and $20 per person for Wine Club Members. Presented in St. Francis Winery’s trademark warm and casual hospitality, their friendly and knowledgeable wine hosts will offer tasting tips to enhance the subtle nuances of each pairing. Offered daily on the vineyard terrace for stunning views of Sugarloaf Ridge or enjoy the experience indoors during the winter months at a cozy fireside table. Walk-ins are welcomed; reservations are required for groups over 10 people.
Self-Guided Vineyard Tour
After your Wine & Cheese Pairing, take a self-guided tour through the winery’s grounds to explore the vineyard and garden, and learn more about how the winery became a Certified California Sustainable Winegrower. In partnership with Sonoma County Winegrowers, several guide posts were installed along the trail explaining the sustainability methods put into practice daily with the use of wind machines, a weather monitoring station, cover crops for soil health, reclaimed water systems and a composting program to feed the culinary gardens. A handy printed map is included with the self-guided tour to give more in-depth information about the history of the winery and its on-going ecological commitments.
Estate Wine Tasting
Offered daily in the main mission-style tasting room, sample limited-production estate wines from the winery’s vineyards in Sonoma Valley and Russian River Valley along with other award winners from their collection of Sonoma County appellation wines.
