Simi In The Cellar - New Tour and Tasting
As one of the oldest continuously operating wineries in California, a vast amount of Simi Winery’s history has been passed down through the generations as stories shared from the cellars, old timeworn sepia photos and through its living legacy in winemaking. The winemaking program is now spearhead by two women winemakers, Susan Lueker (Director of Winemaking) and Lisa Evich (Head Winemaker) who share decades of experience at Simi between them. The team expertly pay homage to the winery’s long and colorful past with each vintage—reflecting its deep roots in Sonoma County since 1876. Leveraging their location at the confluence of Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley, nearly two dozen vineyard-designate, limited-release and Winemaker Select series wines are crafted—many of which are available only at the winery or through their wine club, and in mere hundreds of cases.
Experience all of this rich viticultural heritage on the new Simi In The Cellar Tour and Tasting starting this June. A guided walking tour of the property and a seated wine tasting following allows tour-goers to experience firsthand the grape’s journey from the crush pad and multi-level barrel cellar to the state-of-the-art fermentation and bottling rooms. Guests start the hour-long tour with a welcome-sip of sparkling wine in a souvenir glass (yours to keep!) at the patio fountain. From there, your friendly wine educator will walk you through each stage of Simi’s vineyard and winemaking processes, stopping for bottle samples of their award-winning wines along the route and sharing the winery’s ever-evolving story. The tour concludes with a seated tasting of current releases, including a few of their highly coveted Reserve wines. Tours are at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and limited to just 12 people to provide an intimate experience. While on tour, there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions about the winery and to learn about the surrounding wine country and its activities. Picnic Under The Redwoods
After the tour and tasting, plan to picnic in the shade of the old-growth redwood trees planted by founder Giuseppe Simi’s daughter Isabelle in 1933 to celebrate the end of Prohibition. You’ll find a well-stocked supply of fresh snacks and picnicking provisions in their tasting room such as cheeses, crackers, salumi, olives, tapenades, jam, sweets and more. On Fridays and Saturdays, Simi Executive Chef Kolin Vazzoler prepares house baked bread for purchase—the perfect accompaniment to their Simi Dry Rosé or Sauvignon Blanc sold by the glass in the tasting room.
