‘Simi in the Cellar’ Experience
Reflecting its deep roots in Sonoma County, Simi Winery has created Simi In The Cellar, a behind-the-scenes guided walking tour of their historic stone cellar followed by a seated wine tasting. The tour shares their longstanding history in the area and unique location at the confluence of Russian River, Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys. Offering a glimpse into the by-gone era from when the winery was founded in 1876, the tour incorporates storytelling and wine education as you sip two wines along the tour route. Your journey begins in the fountain courtyard where the 143-year lineage of the property is shared, along with founders Giuseppe and Pietro Simi’s family story. Then it’s off to explore the winemaking facilities with stops at the crush pad where the grapes are received and the multi-level barrel room, including the oldest section of the cellar showcasing the original large redwood tanks circa the late 1800s. The tour concludes back in the tasting room for a seated tasting of the Winemaker Select wines which are available only at the winery or through their wine club. All the wines are served in gorgeous Riedel stemware to create a top-notch wine tasting experience for the novice taster and wine aficionado alike.
Tours are at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and limited to just 12 people to provide an intimate experience. Reservations are required and can be booked at their website for $30 per person or $24 per person for club members.
Stop, Sip and Picnic
After your Simi In The Cellar tour, extend your visit for a relaxing summer picnic. Enjoy the shade beneath the ancient redwood trees – each planted by founder Giuseppe Simi’s daughter Isabelle to mark the end of Prohibition in 1933. The best part is there’s no preparation needed on your part to create a gourmet wine country picnic. Simi Winery has everything available for purchase in their tasting room – from artisan local cheeses and salumi, to jams, condiments, crackers, sweets, and more. It’s ready for you to gather and share with family and friends. Add a wine-by-the-glass or purchase a bottle (if you’ve got a crowd in tow) to enjoy with your snacks. New! Freshly baked focaccia and baguettes from the winery’s pizza oven can be added to your picnic assortment on Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m. this summer. Still hungry? Try one of their seasonal 12" pizzas, also available on Fridays and Saturdays (until sold out) and made from natural yeast dough in either the Forage or Margherita topping.
