Roald Wine Company
Award-Winning Wines are Known for Their Character and Generosity
Roald Wine Company is named for winemaker Greg Nelson’s father. Roald Nelson has always been a positive influence with many exemplary qualities. These qualities became the standard for the expressive wines that Greg is crafting.
The award-winning wines are known for their character and generosity, as well as being delicious and food friendly. Likewise, most people mention that the wines are also interesting and complex. This depth is probably due to the high quality of the grapes that are crushed to make the wines and the traditional winemaking approach. Greg learned a classic approach to winemaking by working at renowned wineries in the area, including Ramey, Benziger, and Martinelli.
Grapes are sourced from well-regarded vineyards with stories of their own. Black Knight Vineyards, for example, sits on a mountaintop overlooking the Petaluma Wind Gap. It was first planted with vines before Prohibition, in the 1880s, and the soils there are derived primarily from metavolcanics and a unique deposit of petrified wood. These grapes produce delicious, interesting wines with character, which you can taste in the Roald Wine Company Sonoma Coast Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
The tasting room in downtown Healdsburg is comfortable and stylish, a beautiful scene in which to enjoy the wines. In addition, furnishings are arranged into comfortable and welcoming spaces for guests to enjoy friendly chats, spirited discussions, or playing a game of backgammon. It’s a great place.
Winemaker Greg Nelson was a research scientist: he discovered the sweet taste receptor and the umami taste receptor.
