Since the fateful day in 1976 when ravens circled overhead as Founding Winemaker Joel Peterson completed his first harvest, Ravenswood has made history as California’s leading Zinfandel producer. This year, Peterson and the newest addition to the flock, Director of Winemaking Gary Sitton, are celebrating Ravenswood’s 41st year with a look back at the winery’s storied history and a toast to its bright future. To mark the milestone, Ravenswood is offering an array of new visitor programs and special events.
Sitton, who first started his career at Ravenswood in 1999, is excited to be back in the Ravenswood family working alongside Joel Peterson, his long-time mentor and friend. “When Joel and the team asked me to come back to Ravenswood it was an easy decision,” says Sitton. “The only word to describe making wine with Joel again is ‘privilege.’”
“In a way, Gary is the prodigal son returned home,” Peterson says. “Welcoming him back to the Ravenswood family and working with him again after all these years is a real joy. We’re looking forward to celebrating Ravenswood’s legacy and raising a glass to the next 41 years.”
In honor of Ravenswood’s Single Vineyard Designate Zinfandels — which Peterson has been making since the winery’s inception, the introduction of the 2015 Designated Zins were just released last month. “What has made Joel an icon is his vision to capture the best expression of California’s historic Zinfandel vineyards within each bottle of Ravenswood, preserving the gift of these century-old vines,” says Sitton. “As Director of Winemaking, my mission is to honor that vision and carry on the legacy of these wines.”
Recently launched, consumers may make arrangements to experience the Ravenswood Library Tasting. Offered Monday through Friday by reservation only, the Library Tasting features a customized flight that includes five wines selected from four decades of Ravenswood winemaking. Guests may relax on the winery’s historic Sonoma terrace as they savor these special vintages.

Wend your way back to the barrel room for a sneak peek of “what’s to come” and sample the wines straight from the barrel.
