Pelletiere Estate Winery
You’ll Leave with a Bigger Smile
Approaching the tasting room of this boutique estate winery, located in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles, the welcoming sign says, “Smile there’s wine ahead.” You can’t help but smile at that point, but wait….because you’ll be leaving with an even bigger smile.
Entrepreneur Turned Vintner
When Janis Pelletiere Denner was 21, she founded a marketing research company. With hard work, determination and passion, the business grew, and 29 years later she sold it. Discovering Paso Robles, falling in love with the area and the wines, several years later Janis started a new adventure, that of winery vintner. In 2014 Janis purchased a vineyard, complete with an 1890’s farmhouse, and Pelletiere Estate Winery was established.
In an area renowned for its Rhone varietals, Janis had a different idea. Being of Italian descent, and finding the perfect property that was already growing Italian varietals, Janis embarked on a journey focusing on producing high quality Italian wines…and what a gift that is. With the vineyard located in the Willow Creek AVA, one of the richest and most esteemed AVAs in Paso Robles, Janis teamed up with well-respected local winemaker Amy Butler, to produce unique, well balanced wines, reflective of the area’s terroir and bursting with personality!
Taste the Difference
You immediately feel comfortable entering the intimate and cozy, “refined rustic” tasting room. Janis welcomes visitors, eager to pour and have you experience the Pelletiere difference. If you are fortunate (as I was) on your visit, you will begin with a splash of Mayson, a beautiful rose of Italian varietals. When I commented how delightful it would be to just sit out on the patio or around the pool and sip this on a warm afternoon, Janis commented: “It will go great with your Thanksgiving turkey also.” I can’t wait to experience that at our table this year. Your tasting may include some varietals you are quite familiar with, such as Zinfandel, Syrah or Viognier. However, the highlight of your tasting will be the Italian varietals, which are the winery’s flagships. Currently, there are four Italian varietals being grown: Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Nebbiolo and Lagrein. A fifth, Aglianico, has recently been planted, so you will have something quite exciting to look forward to down the road. Tastings will generally include about five wines, assuring you an enticing variety to compare…..while you learn about and are exposed to grapes you may not be familiar with. One of the components, which shows the dedication to quality, that sets these wines apart, is that before the wine touches your lips, it spend 32 months in barrel, and another 18 in the bottle. Age worthy as they are, opened now, they are also ready to be thoroughly enjoy.
The Ultimate Wine Country Experience
If traveling with friends or family, round out your stay in Paso Robles wine country with a stay at The Farmhouse, located next to the winery. This two bedroom, two bathroom house, at the edge of the vineyard, is wine country perfection. Surrounded by native plants, and the vineyards, you may never want to leave as you sit on the front porch, sipping a glass of wine, being mesmerized by the tranquility surrounding you. And, on a chilly winter evening, enjoy sipping a glass of Nebbiolo by a crackling fire. Pelletiere also offers two other wine country getaway lodging options.
In the four years since Janis opened Pelletiere, she has created a distinctive and total wine country experience. By focusing on Italian wines, Janis is adding a unique niche for the Paso Robles wine country visitor to enjoy and explore. Grape to glass, as Janis says, is what Pelletiere is all about. Remember that smile you had on your face when you entered? Following your tasting, you will leave with an even larger smile, that will linger, as does the finish of the fine wines, and experience, you have just encountered.
