It’s easy to take the iconic wineries of Napa Valley for granted, but Mumm Napa is one that deserves a choice spot on your itinerary. As you turn off the storied Silverado Trail, you’ll glimpse Mumm Napa’s historic wooden buildings nestled into the hillside among native California oak trees. This charming setting perfectly captures the Mumm Napa mood—relaxed, welcoming, and completely in tune with the surrounding landscape. Inside, expert winemakers transform the finest Napa grapes into exceptional sparkling wines through the méthode traditionnelle process, the very same used to create the best French champagnes.
This time-honored craft was introduced to the Napa Valley more than three decades ago by Mumm Napa’s founder, master French winemaker Guy Devaux. Devaux hand-picked this scenic spot in Rutherford, at the heart of a vibrant network of local growers, and he put as much care and craft into the design of the winery as he did into his wines. His choice of details, from the redwood siding to the green roof, ensured the winery blended in beautifully with its surroundings.
Tour & Tasting Options
Mumm Napa’s “Capturing the Sparkle” tour takes visitors through what Devaux called “the barn” to observe (and taste) the craft of sparkling winemaking first-hand, from handpicking at harvest to assemblage, tirage, and dosage. The tour sets a tone of spontaneous celebration—you might find yourself toasting a crisp January day, emerging buds on the vines, or a Tuesday afternoon. Extend the mood with a stroll through the gallery of Ansel Adams photographs or a leisurely tasting in the Tasting Room or on the Patio, well known for its scenic views of lush vineyards and the Mayacamas mountains. Visitors can enjoy an array of sparkling wines by the flight or glass, and there just might be some surprise still wines to explore.
The stylish Oak Terrace, built around a striking 180-year-old oak tree, offers tableside tastings of winery exclusives and limited availability releases. And the recently opened Vineyard Green offers additional space for groups and families, including pets. Special events, including movie nights and summer lobster feasts, are always a draw.
Reservations Now Available
Until recently, reservations were only needed for larger groups, but a new reservation system is available for any size group, and highly recommended. At the busiest times, Mumm Napa is exceedingly popular, so why not plan ahead? If a spontaneous visit is more your style, a concierge will welcome you just outside the gift shop to explore options.
While you wait, a quick wander around the gift shop finds a tempting array of sparkling and still wines available at the winery. Fully chilled wines are available, if you’re planning a picnic further down the road. Among the favorites to look for on shelf: Brut Prestige and Brut Rosé.
Fine Art Photography Gallery
Art pairs perfectly with wine, and Mumm Napa’s Fine Art Photography Gallery is not to be missed. The permanent Ansel Adams exhibit, “Poetry of Light,” features gelatin silver prints of some of Ansel’s most famous works, including the iconic Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico, captured in the desert in 1941. This incredible scene almost didn’t happen, since Adams, who was traveling in the area, didn’t have his light meter with him. Guessing at the exposure, he later remarked “chance favors the prepared mind.”
