Jay Turnipseed of Rutherford Ranch Wines
Meet Jay Turnipseed, winemaker for Rutherford Wine Company with impressive credentials and award-winning wines to his name from Napa Valley and Sonoma. For over a decade, Jay perfected his technique as the Senior Winemaker at Franciscan Estate & Mount Veeder Winery, where he garnered recognition for crafting Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals from Napa Valley’s diverse sub-AVAs. Jay was also with Gallo of Sonoma as an Enologist working with Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnays.
He loves what he does and it shows. “Today we are among a handful of wineries offering Rutherford Cabernet produced from our estate vineyards on the historic Silverado Trail, says Jay. “We have just released a Reserve Rose and Proprietor’s Selection Sauvignon Blanc, both wines are sourced from select vineyards within the Napa Valley.”
Education played an important role in Jay’s success as a winemaker. He holds a degree in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis and brings a vast breadth of knowledge and experience producing premium California wines. Along with working with Rutherford’s talented team, Jay oversees winemaking for each brand within a diverse portfolio.

• 2016 Proprietor’s Selection Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley ($36)
They aged 40% of the wine in French and American oak to give it a luxurious, creamy mouthfeel. The combination of barrel and stainless-steel fermentations adds unique complexity, distinguishing it from many other Napa Valley Sauvignon Blancs. Fresh fruit flavors of guava, passionfruit, lemongrass and subtle hints of pineapple. This wine is well balanced with crisp acidity.
• 2016 Reserve Rosé, Napa Valley ($32)
This vintage was produced using the Saignée Method, 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Bright and vibrant aromas of fresh raspberry, violets and delicate notes of French Vanilla. Delightfully crisp and refreshing.
• 2014 Franklin Vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($75)
With grapes from the Franklin Estate, located in the northeast corner of Napa Valley’s Rutherford AVA, this wine is luscious and full-bodied with fine-grained tannins. It contains black cherry, chocolate and leather notes with dark plum and blackberry flavors. 24 months in French oak, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
