Jalama Wines Jalama Wines takes its name from the valley where winemaker Mark Cargasacchi grew up, just south of Lompoc. At the end of this valley’s twisty, windy road sits a magnificent beach frequented by the hard-core surfers, campers and those in the know out to get an amazing burger at the beachside café.
Although the Cargasacchi family ranches originally only held Angus cattle and grew lima beans, they began planting grapes in the late ’90s, and now have vineyards in the Jalama Valley (Cargasacchi/ Jalama Vineyard) and the renowned Sta. Rita Hills AVA (Cargasacchi Vineyard). Their close proximity to the ocean keeps the vineyards cool throughout the long Central Coast growing season. This is ideal Pinot country.
Mark began making wine in 2004, while he was the oenologist for Fess Parker’s winery. After moving on to Rideau Vineyard, his production capacity was dwarfed by demand, so he and his partner opened their own production facility in the Wine Ghetto last summer.
Having their own space in the Ghetto has allowed Jalama Wines to expand their production from just under 500 cased to about 1,000 for the 2010 vintage. The individual lots are still small (about 100 cases or less), but they have expanded the varietals to include vineyard-designated Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, a wonderful Sauvignon/Riesling blend as well as the return of the hugely popular Giallo white wine. This vintage will also include his first Pinots from the Cargasacchi Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA.
Although Jalama Wines specializes in Pinot Noir and Syrah, their current current vintages also include Mourvèdre, Giallo white wine (sold out) and El Capitan, their signature Rhône blend; all produced with Santa Barbara County fruit.
When planning your trip to the Wine Ghetto, Jalama Wines is definitely not to be missed! |
