Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards
A Cross Cultural Tour and Tasting Experience
Located 40 miles north of San Francisco at the southern tip of Sonoma County, Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards is the gateway to Sonoma Wine Country. The experience here is best described as a charismatic hybrid that blends the winery’s vibrant Spanish tradition with casual Sonoma County elegance and pure California wines; a perfect addition to any wine country visit.
Savor the breathtaking views of the Carneros winegrowing appellation on Gloria Ferrers’ sun-drenched Vista Terrace, which is so much more than a tasting room. Guests are encouraged to enjoy the winery’s Sonoma Carneros estate vineyards while sipping the still and sparkling wines that showcase the essence of this distinct place. The winery tasting room is the only place to enjoy all 14 of Gloria Ferrer’s sparkling and still wines side by side. Savory Spanish and local cheeses, meats, almonds and other delicacies are available for purchase, and guests are welcome to bring a picnic lunch to complement their wines.
The winery itself is a harmonious marriage of Catalan and California mission design, inspired by the Ferrer family’s 11th century farmhouse in Sant Sandurni d’Anoia, Spain. This architectural treasure is best experienced during a daily tour, which explores the process by which Gloria Ferrer crafts its méthode champenoise sparkling wines. The winery’s Spanish roots are also celebrated in colorful events throughout the year, such as the annual Catalan Festival of Food, Wine and Music in July and the Three Kings Day celebration and Catalan Holiday Luncheon during the holiday season.
Hosted by Certified Wine Professional Cindy Friedman, Gloria Ferrer’s Director of Wine Education, weekly wine education seminars are a great way to learn about the finer points of wine and food pairing. Cindy leads a number of seminars that include an exploration into the versatility of sparkling wines, and how Gloria Ferrer’s different sparkling and still wines stand up to a variety of food flavors and textures from spicy, fried, salty, sweet and the elusive fifth taste, umami. Seminars are held each Friday and on one Saturday per month from 10:30am to noon. Advance reservations are required but every attempt will always be made to accommodate walk-ins.
Since 1998, the winegrowing team has planted and tended olive trees on the estate. Gloria Ferrer now boasts almost 500 olive trees, half of which are Spanish Arbequina olives and the other half, a diverse mix of Italian varietals. The winery produces a small amount of award winning, certified extra virgin olive oil that is sold exclusively in the tasting room.
Gloria Ferrer has two uniquely distinct wine club opportunities for visitors who wish to continue their Catalan/Carneros immersion experience. Choose from the Cuvée Club, which provides two bottles per shipment, or the sparkling-only Tête de Cuvée Club, featuring six bottles per shipment. Shipments for each club occur on a quarterly basis and include a newsletter with winery news and tidbits and a recipe from a local chef. Wine Club members also enjoy complimentary wine and food samples during their visits to the winery, and special invitations to club-only events like the annual Lobster Feed each March and club shipment carryout weekends. In addition, Gloria Ferrer is available year-round for private and corporate events, and weddings, and also hosts a number of other special events like the Mother’s Day Brunch and Full Moon Harvest Dinner that are open to all.
