A Historical Site
Founded in 1972, Firestone was the first major estate winery established in this pastoral Central Coast AVA. Over the past 40 years it has evolved into one of the region’s most popular and successful producers thanks to a portfolio of wines that offer serious quality at reasonable prices.
Estate Vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley
Although not a household name, the Santa Ynez Valley actually has the greatest concentration of wineries in Santa Barbara County. Prior to Prohibition, the valley had roughly 5,000 acres under vine. It took until nearly four decades after repeal for commercial viticulture to reestablish itself. Santa Ynez Valley was granted AVA (American Viticultural Area) status in 1983 and today boasts more than 7,500 acres devoted to vines.
The Local Terroir
The viticultural highlight of Firestone is its 340 acres of estate vineyards set along a series of mesas composed of sandy loam with rocky sub-soils. These well-draining soils minimize vine vigor, which leads to great concentration, accuracy, balance and structure in all of the wines.
The combination of a long growing season and low-nutrient soils allows the estate to cultivate an astonishing range of wines. Firestone’s reds include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Pinot Noir. The whites consist of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
Firestone Tasting Room
Firestone boasts one of the most popular tasting rooms in Santa Barbara County. The lovely visitors’ center has an expansive island bar backed by large picture windows that look out on the vines. For private events, Firestone has a handful of indoor and outdoor areas perfect for weddings, receptions, corporate gatherings, birthdays or anniversaries.
In addition to its featured and reserve tasting options, Firestone is one of the few wineries that offers a comprehensive and complimentary public tour, running daily at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. After the 30-minute in-depth tour, guests can picnic outside and view the estate vineyards, which have been planted on a series of mesas.
