A Historical Winery with American Roots
Firestone Vineyard belongs to an entrepreneurial and adventurous family that dates back more than a century to legendary tire innovator Harvey Firestone. Founded in 1972, Firestone was the first major estate winery established in this pastoral Central Coast AVA. Over the past 40 years it has evolved into one of the region’s most popular and successful producers thanks to a portfolio of wines that offer serious quality at reasonable prices.
The Firestone estate is situated near the charming little town of Los Olivos, two hours north of Los Angeles and five hours south of San Francisco. Los Olivos is known for its old west feel, fine restaurants and homey lodgings. The local vibe is placid, casual and peaceful. The surrounding countryside is typical of rural California with rolling hills that morph seasonally from summer gold to winter green.
Superior Vineyard Sites
Firestone is fortunate to have vineyards situated in the ever elusive “Goldilocks zone” of the Santa Ynez Valley. With an alternating climate of warm sunny days followed by brisk coastal afternoons and evenings, Firestone is able to produce a wide array of varietals. Diurnal temperature swings of up to 50 degrees are normal during the summer growing season. Firestone’s 340 acres of estate vineyards are set along a series of mesas composed of sandy loam with rocky sub-soils. These well-draining, low-nutrient soils minimize vine vigor, which leads to more concentrated and balanced varietal flavors.
Wide Array of Wines
Because of their vineyard location, Firestone is able to produce a wide range of varietals. They offer single-varietal bottlings of all five red Bordeaux varietals (which is not easy to find, especially in Santa Barbara County). Although they produce cool-climate varietals such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, their offerings extend into Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and red blends.
For winemaker, Dave Frazier, Firestone’s superior vineyard sites coupled with its remarkable vineyard team makes the fruit exceptional. With over 12 years of experience in the wine industry, Dave is committed to carrying on the Firestone tradition of crafting approachable, fruit-driven wines that are consistently high in quality.
Firestone has several new releases that you won’t want to miss out on tasting. Their 2016 Sauvignon Blanc is fermented and aged in stainless steel to capture the inherent characteristics of the varietal. This wine is bright, fruit-forward and 100% estate grown. Their 2014 Santa Ynez Valley Syrah recently released features an opulent palate of dark roast coffee, black cherries and cassis. For the red blend lovers, Firestone’s Chairman Series Lineage delivers power, complexity and an impressive tannin-acid structure. Their recently released 2014 has memorably lush aromas and flavors of blackberry, cherry fruits, anise and leather. Visit the Firestone tasting room for a taste of any of the new releases, and even more of their varietals.
The Firestone experience begins the moment you turn off Zaca Station Road and enter the property. Set on a knoll overlooking Santa Ynez Valley, the property is painted with golden hillsides, estate vineyards and speckles of oak trees. The tasting room is expansive and rustic with wood-beamed ceilings and Spanish tile. The tasting room adorns an expansive island bar backed by a large picture window that looks out on the aforementioned vineyard views.
One of the most popular tasting rooms in Santa Barbara County, Firestone offers an assortment of tours, tastings and experiences. For special private events, Firestone has a handful of indoor and outdoor areas suitable for weddings, receptions, private parties, corporate gatherings, birthdays or anniversaries.
In addition to its featured and reserve tasting options, Firestone
is one of the few wineries that offers a comprehensive and complimentary public tour, running daily at 11:15 am and 1:15 pm. After the 30-minute in-depth tour, guests can picnic outside and view the estate vineyards, which have been planted on a series of mesas.
