Clos Du Bois Winery
A Timeless Marriage of French-Style Winemaking With California Fruit
The French term “Clos Du Bois” literally translates to “Closed Wood” and refers to aging wine in oak barrels. At Clos Du Bois Winery, this French-style winemaking method, using only the best oak barrels to age wines made from some of Sonoma County’s best grapes, was started back in 1974 by Founder, Frank Woods.
Through the years, the wines of Clos Du Bois have garnered hundreds of awards, along with consistent critical acclaim. This tradition of excellence continues today, under the watchful eye of Winemaker, Melissa Stackhouse.
A Champion of Sustainability
Clos du Bois has been a champion of sustainability since their inception in 1974. In fact, they are a Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing winery!
Their solar initiative utilizes over 4,000 solar panels to power the winery by almost 100%.
Other eco-friendly accomplishments include:
• Active participant in Sonoma Green Business Program since 2001
• 2002 Innovator Award from the California Dept. of Pesticide Regulation
• 2003 Fish Friendly Farming Outstanding Land Steward of the Year
• Recipient of 2010 Save Energy Now award for “Energy Champion Plant”
• Restored fish and wildlife habitats and improved water quality
• Reduced pesticide use in their vineyards with integrated pest management
• Building healthy soil by organically converting grape pulp, skins and seeds into more than 7,000 cubic yards of compost, which they return to the vineyards
• Encouraging beneficial insects by planting cover crops
A Deliciously Fun Place To Visit
Clos Du Bois Winery is located north of Healdsburg, just off Highway 101. Wind your way up the scenic driveway and park your car in the shade, under the huge bank of solar panels. If you have an electric car, there are plenty of charging stations available. Sustainability is key here. More on that a little later, but first, let’s talk about the tasting room, picnic area, and of course, the wines.
Shaded picnic tables and lawn games dot the large grassy area that surrounds the tasting room and winery. This place invites you to relax and stay a while.
The large, airy tasting room features a horseshoe-shaped bar, complete with several comfortable barstools. Two large flat-screen TVs are mounted on the wall above the bar. A fantastic selection of wine and food related gifts beckons to shoppers.
No tasting appointment is needed at this friendly place – choose a flight of five delicious wines and enjoy!
All of the wines are great, but don’t miss:
2015 Calcaire – classic Chardonnay, with perfectly balanced apple, citrus and oak notes.
2017 Lightly Bubbled Chardonnay – slightly sweet and sparkly, with hints of fresh green apple, white flowers and lime.
2014 Marlstone – classic Cabernet Sauvignon, with aromas and flavors of black cherry, mocha, vanilla and green olive notes, wrapped in a plush velvety mouthfeel.
