This year marks Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren’s 37th harvest at Chateau St Jean. Her extensive experience coupled with her passion and dedication results in fine wines of nuance and balance.
One of the things she enjoys most about her job is putting together the final blend for the Reserve wines. “Since no two vintages are alike, it gives us the opportunity to carefully search for the vineyard lots that offer the biggest fruit expression and the ability to age in order to create a wine that truly captures the best of the vintage,” says Margo. The Reserve wines represent the most concentrated, distinctive and balanced wines made at Chateau St. Jean.
The flagship Cinq Cépages is named after the five varieties grown in Bordeaux: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. All five varietal components are used each vintage to create the stylized blend that is Cinq Cépages. Before blending, each varietal is aged separately for twenty-three months exclusively in French oak. Once the wines are assembled, the blend spends almost an entire additional year in the bottle before release.
