Char Vale Winery
Located in the lush Green Valley of the Russian River Valley, Char Vale is a new, family-owned vineyard and winery with two key goals: to make the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines; and to create a welcoming retreat, where you can relax and enjoy these wines.
Char Vale Medal Winning Wines
As a recent review in the Sonoma County Preferred Wine Country Day Trips (Spring/Summer 2017) stated, “Prepare to be wowed. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs are truly world class, yet affordable.”
Char Vale had its first harvest in 2014 and currently has two styles of estate-grown Pinot Noir available. The wines are made solely from grapes grown and nurtured in the ten acre estate vineyard. The grapes are crafted into wine in the adjoining winery.
The two styles of Pinot Noir are created by the Char Vale winemaker, Tim Callahan, through blending of distinct barrels of wine derived from separately harvested and oak aged batches of wine. The Estate Pinot Noir leans to a rich, fruity taste experience, while the Estate Vineyard Select Pinot Noir has complex layers of flavor. Both wines are limited production, less than 200 cases annually, and both are currently available for the 2014 and 2015 vintage years.
Char Vale is proud that, after only two vintages, its Pinot Noir was awarded a Gold Medal in the recent Santa Rosa Press Democrat, North Coast Wine Challenge.
Char Vale also produces a Chardonnay from grapes harvested at a single vineyard in the Carneros region of Sonoma County. The grapes are pressed and crafted into wine at the Char Vale winery. The Chardonnay is lightly oaked, with hints of citrus, pears and apples. Less than 200 cases are produced annually. The wine is currently available for the 2014 and 2015 vintages.
For the first time, Char Vale has produced a Rosé of Pinot Noir, from the 2015 vintage. It is ideal for summer dining. Production is extremely limited at less than 40 cases.
The tasting room opened at the Char Vale property earlier this year. It was created by remodeling of the original home at the site. A full glass wall and large, adjoining deck open up expansive views, overlooking the vineyard, and make a welcoming location to sit back and taste the wines. For those interested, there is an easy access from the deck to the nearby vines, allowing a close look at the developing fruit. A Char Vale staff member is usually available to tell you about the cultivation of the grapes and progress during the season.
Char Vale has just grafted a few additional clones of Pinot Noir into the vineyard, to achieve additional blends in the future. A small amount of Riesling has also been added, with the goal of producing a future dessert wine.
As stated in the Sonoma County Preferred Wine Country Day Trips review, “Char Vale Winery is friendly, intimate and unpretentious. Don’t miss this place.”
The tasting room is open Thursday through Monday, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No appointments are needed. Because of the intimate nature of the tasting room, it is suggested that parties of over six individuals call ahead, so seating can be anticipated.
