Niels Udsen, co-proprietor of Castoro Cellars with his wife Bimmer, was given the nickname “il castoro” (the beaver) while studying in Italy years ago. While considering a name for their fledgling winery 33 years ago, Castoro seemed to fit, and a DAM fine name it is! A visit to Castoro Cellars holds not only the promise of tasting DAM fine wines, but of having a DAM fine time with a personable staff as you drink in the surrounding atmosphere and all it has to offer.
Your DAM Fine Experience
Your DAM fine experience begins as you meander up the pathway, under the grape arbor, towards the tasting room. Walking under a canopy of green leaves and grapes during spring and summer, vibrant red and orange leaves during fall, and throughout winter, as the vines sleep, there is a peaceful feeling as you approach the inviting tasting room, and welcoming patio.
Castoro’s tasting menu is ever changing, offering an eclectic assortment of single varietals (such as the 2015 Falanghina, a new Italian varietal), familiar favorites including Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Barbera, in addition to white and red blends. The 2014 Zinfusion, a Castoro signature blend recently received a 90 point rating from Wine Enthusiast Magazine, and several Castoro creations brought home an assortment of medals from the 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest competition of American wines. As a commitment to the environment, Castoro’s estate wines are from organically grown grapes with the winery and vineyards being SIP and CCOF certified.
The Fun is Just Beginning
Once you have spent time tasting, don’t rush off, but to continue to enjoy your DAM fine adventure. Bring a picnic, order a glass or bottle, and sit out on the restful patio, overlooking vineyards and flowers, shaded by a canopy of oak trees. Once you have finished your lunch or just soaked in the atmosphere, take a stroll to the art gallery. Here Castoro has rotating art exhibits by mostly local artists. Appreciate the art on the walls, as you did the art in the bottle.
After strolling through the gallery, with a gentle breeze blowing, hawks floating overhead, what better time than to take a self-guided agricultural walking tour through much of the property, as you play a fun round of DISC GOLF, on the Central Coast’s premier 18 hole disc golf course. Enjoy the vineyards, relax, take in the fresh air and decompress from the world around you.
