Castello di Amorosa
The Castle of Love
The name says it all. Castello di Amorosa is a spectacular winery built with a whole lot of love from true master craftsmen and artisans from across the globe. Each one instrumental in making owner Dario Sattui’s dream of replicating a late 13th-century Tuscan-style castle come to life amongst the beautiful hills of Calistoga. With over 121,000 feet of medieval artistry achieved over a 14-year construction period, there are eight levels (four aboveground, four underground) and 107 rooms designed with incredible accuracy, no expense spared. The iron work for the doors, walls, hinges and light fixtures was hand-forged by Italian artisans. The mural in the Great Hall is a replica from a fresco in Siena and was hand-painted by artists flown in from Umbria. The centuries-old salvaged cobblestones near the draw bridge (yes, it is a real castle) were shipped over from Italy in hundreds of containers. The entire property is in keeping with an authentic working-castle of the day with a stable of chickens, sheep and goats running in and out of vineyard rows, ducks and geese in the moat, and a whole family of stately peacocks near the entrance to greet you.
Touring The Castle
Four levels down from the main courtyard, about 70-80 feet beneath the earth, are a myriad of wine cellars; an Armory; the Torture Chamber; Il Passito Room, the member-only tasting area; fermentation and barrel aging rooms – all of which your professional wine educator will help you explore, sharing the fascinating history of Castello di Amorosa along the way. The 60-minute guided walk through the castle for $45 per person concludes at a private-to-the-group tasting bar where you will enjoy a 45-minute tasting of five premium wines which are sold only at the Castello or through their wine club and website. Dining locally after your tour? Many local restaurants honor the Castello’s wines with free corkage, so you can buy a bottle at the castle and bring it to the restaurant for dinner. A Castello staff member will be happy to provide you with a current list of local restaurants.
