Celebrating 119 Years
Beaulieu Vineyard, the home of luminary Georges de Latour, celebrates a historic milestone this year, the 80th anniversary release of the acclaimed Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Since its inception in 1936, this wine has served as the framework for what Beaulieu Vineyard crafts, weaving a rich story of heritage and a captivating spirit of innovation. Celebrated by presidents, nobility and collectors across the globe, this wine has held a legacy like no other. Today, Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has become the benchmark Napa Valley Cabernet as well as one of the most collected American wines. Beaulieu Vineyard continually develops a foundation of producing exceptional wines from exceptional vineyards and the famed “Rutherford Dust,” with an ever-present focus on the future, constantly evolving to deliver the very best wine experience.
André Tchelistcheff, the most profoundly influential winemaker in Napa Valley, guided the philosophy of innovation and terroir expression that defines the wines of Beaulieu Vineyard today. Born into an aristocratic Russian family, Tchelistcheff studied viticulture and enology at the Pasteur Institute and the Institute National Agronomique in Paris. Upon arriving to the Napa winery, André sampled wine from each parcel of the Rutherford estate and began experimenting with the rigorous small-lot fermentation that continues to this day. His many innovations included building a cold room to ferment white wines and establishing malolactic fermentation as standard practice for making red wine. After tasting an exceptional lot of 1936 Cabernet Sauvignon, André insisted that its quality demanded a separate, special bottling. This became the inaugural vintage of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
Although André Tchelistcheff retired from Beaulieu Vineyard in 1973, he returned in 1991 to work once more with the winemaking team. Together, they tasted 50 vintages of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, studying the effects of vintage and bottle age on the entire vertical collection. They also instituted the practice of aging red wines in French oak and experimented with a number of small-lot wines, including the “Maestro” winery-exclusive wines, which were named in Tchelistcheff’s honor.
